[message type=”information”]The minimum enrollment for this program is 10 persons[/message]

Introduction

As regards to the rapid population growth in many developing countries and increase of economic development, sustainability becomes a very important issue to cope with. Sustainability is often treated as a synonym for environmentalism but that is not the whole story. Sustainability is not just about the environment quality; it is also about social equity and economic prosperity (www.tacoma.uw.edu). According to the millennium project, there are 15 global challenges that we have to face to in the 21st century as presented in the figure below (www.millennium-project.org).

Figure 1. Global challenges defined by the millennium project

By 2050, more than 6 billion people will live in urban areas. This development calls for ‘smart’ approaches to ensure that cities are optimized for environmental impact, economic activity, energy consumption, and ‘the good life’. To achieve this kind of situations, it requires rethinking as the need for smart urban solutions has never been greater. Whether developing new cities from scratch or rebuilding existing cities, the challenge is to ensure that the city becomes more livable, economically successful, and environmentally responsible (www.stateofgreen.com/en/InFocus/Smart-Cities). Based on the reason above, the intensive course on urban sustainability and human settlement is designed in order to bring the perspective of smart city to young generation. Not only exposing the urban problems especially in the developing country i.e. Indonesia, but also introducing the concept of a smart city and its implementations. Besides lectures delivered by professors and professionals in various aspects of urban development such as solid waste management, water pollution control, flood management, water supply and demand, urban infrastructure planning, economic sustainability, community engagement, et cetera, this intensive course will also be enriched by discussion activities and some site visits. The program becomes even more interesting as it includes cultural activities.
